Chongqing Wushan Twelve Peaks

The two lines of ancient poetry, 'Let the boat sail down Wu Gorge, with the heart on the twelve peaks,' express people's admiration for the twelve peaks. The twelve peaks of Wushan are located on both sides of the Wu Gorge on the Yangtze River, with six peaks each in the north and south of the river, ranging from 10-30 kilometers away from Wushan County.

There are six peaks in the north of the river: Denglong, Shengquan, Chaoyun, Wangxia (Goddess), Songluan, and Jixian Peak, all of which can be seen on the river; Only Feifeng, Cuiping, and Juhe can be seen in the six peaks of Jiangnan. The three peaks of Jingtan, Qiyun, and Shengsheng are hidden within the Shennu River.

The twelve peaks are as beautiful as paintings, with various postures, and have been extraordinary throughout history.

Wushan Twelve Peaks: Goddess Peak

Shennu Peak, also known as Wangxia Peak or Meiren Peak, is one of the twelve peaks of Wushan, located on the north bank of the Wu Gorge River, about 15 kilometers east of Wushan County. A giant rock stands out amidst the clouds and mist of Qingfeng, resembling a graceful and beautiful young girl, hence the name Shennu Peak. There is a saying in ancient times that goes, 'Clouds dominate the peaks, and the foot of the mountain plunges straight into the river. Those who discuss it call it Tai, Hua, Heng, and Lu all extraordinary.'.

Whenever clouds and smoke swirl around the mountaintop, the human shaped stone pillar, as if draped in thin gauze, appears even more charming and alluring. The first to welcome the brilliant morning glow and the last to bid farewell to the splendid evening glow every day, hence the name 'Wangxia Peak'.

There are three reasons why Shennu Peak is famous throughout history: firstly, Song Yu fictionalized a story in his "Shennu Fu" about King Xiang of Chu having a secret meeting with a goddess; secondly, there is a legend about the goddess Yao Ji descending to earth to help Yu control the floods; and thirdly, there is indeed a stone standing tall on the side of the peak, resembling a young girl.

Colorful clouds surround the peaks, and the long dragon seems to dance wildly in the air, which is extremely spectacular. The Qing Dynasty poet Shen Hongkui wrote a poem praising the climbing of the Dragon Peak: "At the extreme, the layers of mountains resemble a reclining dragon, with colorful clouds clustered in the middle and high places

Arriving at the summit of the rising mountain, one can see the Yangtze River from afar, cutting off the clouds and rain of Wushan. With a rushing water, thousands of peaks rise sharply.
