Introduction to the Three Gorges Stone Stele Fortress Tourist Scenic Area

The Three Gorges Shipai Fortress Tourist Area (formerly Yangjiaxi Military Drifting Scenic Area) is a national AAAA level scenic spot and the world's first military themed drifting project. As one of the ten scenic spots for tourism in the New Three Gorges, it has functions such as drifting exploration, military training, and water-based leisure. The drifting section is divided into dynamic water drifting and static water drifting. Tourists can experience both the excitement of surfing and the leisure of boating on Pinghu.

The Shipai Fortress Tourist Area is located in the middle of the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam, about 20 kilometers away from the center of Yichang city. The place name of Shipai is derived from the towering boulder by the river. The scenic area consists of three parts: Yangjiaxi Military Drifting, Shipai Anti Japanese War Memorial Hall, and Shipai Anti Japanese War Memorial Monument.

Hidden in a secluded valley, one can appreciate the excitement of surfing and exploring the beach, as well as the leisurely feeling of boating on Pinghu Lake, as one swims in the painting.

Shipai is located in the middle of the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam, about 20 kilometers away from the center of Yichang city. The place name of the stone plaque is derived from the towering boulder by the river. The boulder is made of granite, over 40 meters high, 13 meters wide, 4 meters thick, and weighs more than 4300 tons. It looks like a carefully crafted "plaque" in all directions, like a knife. People call this place the stone plaque. It is said that this stone has a history of thousands of years. There are many touching legends about the origin of stone tablets, and the most "mainstream" legend is that when the Jade Emperor was inspecting the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, he was moved by the beauty of the mountains and rivers here and surrendered a holy tablet. The meaning of the Jade Emperor remains unknown to us mortals. There is a group of weathered stones on the mountaintop not far behind the stone tablet, each with a tangible and divine appearance, resembling the four disciples of Tang Monk passing through this place. From a distance, they look like the four disciples of Tang Monk in a lantern shadow play, who are searching for scriptures in the western sky. Therefore, the common people call this section of the stone tablet's gorge the Lantern Shadow Gorge. According to historical records, the administrative center of Houzhou before the Northern Song Dynasty and the administrative center of Yiling County during the Jianyan period of the Southern Song Dynasty were both located in Shipai. At that time, Shipai was a prosperous city with convenient transportation, especially attracting attention as a salt road. During the Song Dynasty, literati and scholars such as Ouyang Xiu, Su Zhe, Huang Tingjian, and Lu You all stayed here and left behind many beautiful poems and verses. However, it was in the 1940s that the Chinese military and civilians became famous for their defense of the Shipai Fortress against Japanese invaders. According to the "Donghu County Annals", there is a giant rock in Jiangnan that spans sixty to seventy meters and resembles a raft, hence the name "Shiling Pai". The name "Shiling Pai" comes from this. The Shiling brand is 32 meters high, with a top width of 12 meters and a bottom width of 13 meters. It is about 4 meters thick and weighs more than 4300 tons. From a distance, it is magnificent and has an extraordinary momentum.

Transportation within the city: Take a boat from the "Two Dams and One Gorge" Shipai Tourist Terminal on the Huangbai River in Yichang city. The boat departs at a fixed time every morning at 08:30.

Best travel time: Yichang area belongs to the subtropical monsoon humid climate, with abundant rainfall and heat resources, pleasant climate, and an average annual temperature of about 17 ℃. The winter climate is warm, and the average temperature is much higher than that of nearby Wuhan city at the same latitude.
