The Three Gorges Ladder City is located within the Three Gorges Ladder City Scenic Area in Yunyang County, Chongqing. During its tourism development, Yunyang proposed an important strategy to turn the city into a scenic area and put forward the brand slogan "Three Gorges Ladder City, Wonderland Yunyang". In 2014, Yunyang Ticheng Scenic Area was officially approved by the National Tourism Administration as a national AAAA (4A) scenic spot. In December 2015, Three Gorges Ticheng was selected as one of the 30 best new tourist attractions in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.
Mopanzhai is its common name, and its elegant name is Panshi City. It is named after the mountain where it is located, which looks like a huge grinding disc. The mountainous terrain of Mopan Mountain is strategically important, as it controls the Yangtze River and Pengxi River. Its military position is extremely important, and it serves as a platform for military strategists. At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, the Mongolian army entered Sichuan from Shaanxi. In order to resist the Mongolian army, in the second year of Chunyou in the Southern Song Dynasty (1242), Yu Jie was appointed as the pacification and disposal envoy of Sichuan. In response to the Mongolian army's good riding and shooting skills and unfamiliarity with mountain warfare, he adopted the defense strategy of "using mountains as fortifications and deploying them in a scattered manner". He selected 15 fortresses in the Yangtze River, Jialing River, and some transportation hubs for renovation and construction, making them strategic defense priorities for both advance and retreat, and both offense and defense. The most famous among these 15 fortresses is undoubtedly Hechuan Fishing City. As the fulcrum of the defense system of Wanzhou Tiansheng City (also known as Xiaoshi City), Panshi City has also received attention. General Lv Shikui, dispatched by Yu Jie, expanded and stationed here to defend against the Mongolian army. After Mengge died in the Battle of Fishing City, the Mongolian army retreated, and Panshi City did not have a famous battle like Fishing City, so its reputation was slightly inferior. But "the pillar of Kuimen, the guarantee of Dongchuan." Due to its important military position, it was renovated and expanded during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Among the numerous staircases in Yunyang, the most majestic and spectacular one is undoubtedly climbing the cloud ladder. This huge "human" shaped stone staircase starts from Binjiang Avenue on the banks of the Yangtze River, runs up the slope, crosses the center of the city, and ends at the high point of Panshi City in Xinxian City. The staircase is over 1400 meters long and 30 meters wide, with a vertical height difference of more than 200 meters. Its large scale, unique design, and impressive momentum are truly rare in the city, and it is well deserved to be known as the "first ladder of the Yangtze River for thousands of miles". From the Zhang Fei Temple on the south bank of the Yangtze River, looking across the river, climbing the cloud ladder, the Qunyi Square in the middle, and the Panshi City at the top, it resembles a huge reclining Buddha; Starting from the Yangtze River, there are two staircases called Qinglong Ladder and Feifeng Ladder, just like the two giant legs of a reclining Buddha; The dragon and phoenix meet at Qunyi Square, a two-level circular square with an area of over 16000 square meters that resembles the belly of a reclining Buddha; After two staircases converge at Qunyi Square, they form one staircase and continue to extend towards Panshi City. This is the neck of the reclining Buddha; Panshi City is certainly the head of the reclining Buddha. The reclining Buddha steps on the Yangtze River with both feet, and the blue sky above his head is majestic. Looking up, Panshi City rises high into the clouds, giving a feeling of climbing into the clouds.
The stone used for climbing the cloud ladder is all selected from the unique blue and white stone materials in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, carefully carved by local traditional craftsmen. Each level of stone steps embodies the countless efforts of craftsmen. 1519 stone steps, like a capital letter, hang down from the towering rock city and drag all the way to the edge of the Yangtze River, with a great momentum of soaring through the clouds. The wide green belts on both sides of the staircase, with beautiful patterns composed of red flowers and green leaves, are like two exquisite colored satin fabrics, leaning against the staircase and stretching all the way to the horizon, connecting with the clouds and mist in the sky.
The Three Gorges Cultural Relics Park is a demonstration project for the protection of cultural relics in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. The reproduction and relocation work was started in November 2001. In accordance with the principle of relocation from other places and reconstruction as is, eleven cultural relics, including Yuanwenchang Palace, Emperor's Palace, Dongyue Temple, Shaanxi Arrow Tower, Restoration School, Yunyang South City Gate, Xiahuang's Filial memorial archway, Changtan Stone Stele Pavilion, Six Gang Stone Inscriptions, Oxtail Rock Paintings, and Dragon Ridge Stone Inscriptions, were collectively moved to the park. At the same time, there are more than 1000 underground cultural relics excavated from underground archaeology in the park, which demonstrate the development of the Three Gorges civilization on the Yangtze River.
The Longjiling Cultural Corridor is 6.5 kilometers long, and it is like a huge "ecological green lung" embedded in the center of the city. The Longjiling Cultural Corridor is built on the ridge line, featuring numerous cultural landscapes such as Shuangjing Village, Mr. Yanglong, Gaozu Pavilion, Orange Official Hall, "The First Alliance in the World", and Poetry Corridor. This is a green jade bestowed upon the people of Yunyang by heaven, and this corridor has won the National Habitat Environment Model Award.
