I went to Wuhan by taking a bus to Yichang. When booking tickets on the official website of Meiya Three Gorges Cruise, the customer service recommended me to go to Yichang because the price was almost half cheaper. However, when I went for sightseeing, I was in a hurry to take the bus, but everything else was fine and very good.
I spent a little extra money and went straight to Wuhan. It was a pretty good trip. I saw the Three Gorges Dam and passed the ship lock. I was very satisfied. The tour guide and accommodation were both very good. This is my cruise guide from Chongqing to Wuhan. For reference only.

Every attraction was voluntary, and the tour guide explained it in detail. If you want to go to Wuhan when you arrive in Yichang, then you can go to Wuhan and have some fun yourself.

When you go to Wuhan, you will cross the Three Gorges Dam and the ship lift. The scenery is quite spectacular, but it's still possible. When you go to Yichang, the price is a bit cheaper.
